Reporting An Absence

If Your Child Is Unable to Attend School

We understand that there will be occasions when a learner is genuinely too unwell to attend school.

If your child is going to be absent, it is important that you let Gosberton Academy know as soon as possible on the first morning of their absence. This helps us to ensure that all of our learners are safe and accounted for.

How to Report an Absence

Please contact the Academy Office before the start of the school day to let us know that your child will not be attending or make contact with on Iris Reach by sending an absence message - this will then be picked up by school staff.

Telephone: 01775 840414

When reporting an absence, please provide:

  • Your child's name and class
  • The reason for their absence
  • Any relevant information about their illness or circumstances
  • An indication of when you expect your child to return, if known

If your child remains absent for more than one day, please keep the academy updated regarding their absence and expected return.

If We Haven't Heard From You

Keeping children safe is our priority.

If a learner does not arrive at school and we have not received a reason for their absence, a member of the academy team will make contact with their parent or carer to establish the reason for the absence and ensure that the learner is safe.

It is therefore important that we always have up-to-date contact details for parents and carers.

When Your Child Is Unwell

We recognise that deciding whether a child is well enough to attend school is not always straightforward.

Children should remain at home when they are too unwell to participate in the normal school day. However, minor illnesses will not always mean that a child needs to stay away from school.

If you are unsure whether your child is well enough to attend, please contact the academy. We will be happy to discuss this with you.

Medical and Dental Appointments

Wherever possible, we ask families to arrange routine medical and dental appointments outside of school hours.

Where an appointment during the school day is unavoidable, please inform the Academy Office in advance. We encourage learners to attend school before and/or after their appointment wherever possible, minimising the amount of learning they miss.

We may ask to see confirmation of the appointment.

Returning to School

We want learners to return to school as soon as they are well enough to do so.

If your child has experienced a longer period of illness, has an ongoing medical condition or you are concerned about their return to school, please speak to us. We can work with you to consider whether any additional support is needed.

Please Keep Us Informed

Good communication between home and school is essential.

If there is something affecting your child's attendance, please talk to us. Understanding what is happening allows us to work with you and provide appropriate support wherever possible.
