Why Attendance Matters

Every Day is an Opportunity

At Gosberton Academy, we want every learner to have the best possible opportunity to learn, belong and achieve.

Being in school regularly is an important part of this. Each school day brings new learning, opportunities to practise and build upon previous knowledge, time with friends and teachers, and experiences that contribute to a child's wider development.

Every day attended matters.

Learning Builds Day by Day

Learning does not happen in isolation. What children learn today often provides the foundations for what they will learn tomorrow.

Regular attendance helps learners to:

  • Develop their knowledge and understanding
  • Build upon previous learning
  • Practise and consolidate important skills
  • Participate fully in lessons and wider curriculum experiences
  • Receive regular feedback and support from their teachers
  • Develop confidence and independence as learners

When days are missed, children can sometimes miss important steps in their learning, making subsequent learning more difficult.

Belonging and Friendships Matter Too

School is about much more than academic learning.

Coming to school regularly allows learners to develop friendships, confidence and a strong sense of belonging. It provides opportunities to work and play alongside others, contribute to their class and take an active part in the wider life of the academy.

From assemblies and celebrations to trips, visitors, sporting opportunities and special events, so much of school life happens beyond individual lessons.

We want every learner to feel that they belong at Gosberton Academy and that their presence matters.

Developing Positive Habits

Regular attendance and punctuality help children to establish positive routines from an early age.

Being ready for school, arriving on time and participating in the school day helps learners develop important qualities such as:

  • Responsibility
  • Independence
  • Resilience
  • Organisation
  • Commitment
  • Perseverance

These are habits and attitudes that can support children throughout their education and beyond.

Every Day Adds Up

An occasional day away from school can seem small, but absence can quickly accumulate over the course of an academic year.

Missing school regularly can mean missing not only individual lessons but also the sequence of learning that connects them together.

That's why we encourage the highest possible attendance for every learner.

Our message is simple:

Every day attended is another opportunity to learn something new, strengthen a friendship, experience something different and achieve something to be proud of.

We Understand That Attendance Isn't Always Easy

We also recognise that there are times when children are genuinely too unwell to attend school and that some families may experience circumstances that make regular attendance more difficult.

Where there are barriers to attendance, we want to understand them.

Our approach is to work alongside learners and their families to identify difficulties, consider what support may be needed and help children return to regular attendance wherever possible.

If you are worried about your child's attendance or they are finding it difficult to come to school, please speak to us. Early conversations can help us understand what is happening and work together to find a way forward.

Together, Every Day Matters

Excellent attendance is a partnership between learners, families and the academy.

By working together, we can help ensure that every learner has the opportunity to experience everything that Gosberton Academy has to offer.

Be here. Belong here. Learn here. Achieve here.
